Chameli turned out to be the last directorial venture of prolific filmmaker, Anant Balani (Joggers Park, Mumbai Matinee, Patthar Ke Phool, Ek Din 24 Ghante) who unfortunately couldn't complete it due to his untimely demise. Sudhir Mishra (Is Raat Ki Subah Nahi, Dhaaravi, Calcutta Mail) subsequently took hold of the directorial reins of the film.
Chameli is a contemporary love story between a man who has lost his wife and a professional and much hardened prostitute. A sudden rainstorm brings them together on one pavement, and sparks off a romance unlike any other.
Aman Kapoor, 32, (Rahul Bose ) has lost his wife and still to be born child on a rainy night in an accident a couple of years ago. The rain brings back memories of that night and haunts his life.
On another rainy night in another part of Mumbai city, Chameli (Kareena Kapoor ), then a young and innocent girl, now a hardened prostitute was lured by her uncle to Mumbai and sold to a brothel. The rain terrifies her.
It is this rain that brings together 2 strangers on one night in the arches of Flora Fountain, South Mumbai. And a relationship blossoms between 2 people who would never have met. A relationship that alters their life forever!
The film is produced under the banner of Pritish Nandy Communications and has some soulful tunes composed by Shandesh Shandhaliya (Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Road, Rules). Sunidhi Chauhan sings all the songs in Chameli and surprises displaying the softer side of her voice.
The film makes a nationwide release on January 9, 2004.
