By Joginder Tuteja, February 5, 2004 - 17:50 IST

Ajay Devgan's film festival caravan never stops! On the heals of 2003 that saw around 5-6 Devgan releases getting released in quick succession, 2004 again seems to be one more year which will see number of Ajay Devgan releases. In 'Zameer - The Fire Within' he is back to basics with two heroines vying for his attention - Amisha Patel (who was also seen last year in Parwana with him) and Mahima Chaudhary (Dil Kya Kare). A project that has taken quite some time to reach the finishing mark, it is apparent from the looks of Ajay Devgan, which has changes remarkably in last couple of years. Zameer has 5 songs by Jatin Lalit and 2 by Nikhil Vinay. Sameer writes for the majority of songs.

Two tracks composed by Nikhil Vinay are 'Tum Kitne Bechain Ho' and 'Dil Ke Badle Dil To'. Former by Sonu Nigam and Anuradha Paudwal has such predictable lyrics by Sameer that you can actually sing along in the first hearing itself. Pray, does it really require much to think that the next line after 'Tum Kitne Bechain Ho' will obviously be '... Hum Kitne Betaab Hai'?

Another track 'Dil Ke Badle Dil To' is a regular love song by Babul Supriyo and Shreya Goshal that just fails to rise. Want to know about the lyrics? They go like - 'Dil Ke Badle Dil To Saari Duniya Deti Hai......Hum To Dil Ke Saath Apni Jaan Bhi De Denge' Lyricist of the day - Praveen Bhardwaj!

Comparisons are inevitable with the classic from 'Raja Hindustani' when a song goes with lyrics 'Pardesi Pardesi'. A routine love track by Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik and Sapna Awasthi, it doesn't go anywhere near to the Aamir Khan track and just passes muster.

'Tere Pyar Ne Deewana' is a trademark Jatin Lalit song - melodious, fresh and nice to hear. Oh! How much we miss Jatin Lalit but off late they have disappeared completely from the musical scene after the super-hit score they gave in 'Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham'. Apart from the occasional track here and there, they seem to have stopped working on any assignments.

Nostalgia flows when Kavita Krishnamurthy begins her alaap in 'Kum Nahi Kisi Se' which is so very reminiscent of 'Aaj Main Upar' from Jatin Lalit's 'Khamoshi'. But thereon the number becomes predictable and there is nothing original about it. A track about 'aaj ki ladkiyan' who are not less than anyone else, it is about girl-power which has been witnessed before innumerous times.

She reunites with Udit Narayan in a drag track 'Dil Ye Dua De' which is so very boring that it may not actually find a place in the final cut of the movie. Supposed to be a love song, it makes you feel anything but lovey-dovey. Skip it!

If you thought 'Dil Ye Dua De' is the only track that drags in Zameer, then it's not your fault as 'Zindagi Ke Faisle Mein Humne Ye Bhi Na Socha' follows only after that. A number written by Israr Ansari about 'pyaar-mein-dhokha and toota-dil', it takes you all the way back to 80's! Udit Narayan seems as disinterested in the proceedings as a batsman will feel if he needs 10 runs to win on the last ball of the innings!

Music company T-Series definitely knew about the strengths and the weakness of the musical score of Zameer and hence have stuffed the album with as many as 7 bonus tracks from the current hits of Chameli, Tere Bina, Kismat, Muskaan, Insaaf, Rudraksh and Wrong Number. Buy 'Zameer' only if you already haven't bought the 'Top-10' latest hits album from T-Series!
