  Music Reviews
By Joginder Tuteja, December 30, 2003 - 18:03 IST

A project that has the name 'Bobby Bedi' associated with it implicitly brings some class along with. He is the same man who brought us Bandit Queen, Saathiya, The Rising (in production) and now 'Maqbool', a Mumbai gangworld movie inspired by Shakespeare's classic 'Macbeth'. It is commendable to bring pure talent sharing the same screen with names like Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapoor, Tabu and Irrfan Khan. And that too when the director in picture is music composer Vishal Bhardwaj who has shifted his priorities to movie direction and has already made a name in the international circuit with the wide appreciation for his film Makdee (Shabana Azmi). As per the pre-release reports and the acclaim he has already received in numerous film festivals abroad, 'Maqbool' is another feather in his cap, a must see for all and a step in the right direction by the director Vishal. Since he is at the helm of the affairs, it is but natural to have him compose the music and unite with Gulzar saab who does the lyrics.

'Jhin Min Jhini' is a shaadi-byaah song with a difference. Not at all similar to typical Bollywood marriage dance numbers, it has a different tune and rhythm altogether and the picturization is vibrant and lovely too. Sadhna Sargam and Anuradha Sriram excel in this number, which has Ustad Sultan Khan and Rakesh Pandit providing classical feel.

Daler Mehendi shows his versatility as a classical singer when he shifts from his bhangra pop image and sings 'Ru-Ba-Ru'. Rakesh Pandit, Sabir Khan and Dominque give him ample support.

'Rone Do' is a slow starting number and remains the same throughout. Rekha Vishal catches the annoyance of Gulzar's lyrics very well and sings to perfection. Though there is not much in the number for the common man due to it's slow moving nature and heavy-duty lyrics (as is the hallmark of Gulzar saab), composer Vishal Bhardwaj shows his excellence as one of the few composers of today's times who can compose classical tracks with same flair as conventional mainstream tracks.

Same thought is reinforced in 'Dheemo Re', a complete classical track by Ustad Sultan Khan which doesn't hold anything for the masses but may be an asset for the lovers of Indian classical music.

Soon follows another track based on Indian classical music - 'Rukhe Naina' by newcomer Sanjeev Abhyankar. A welcome addition to the list of talented singers, his voice is pure and clear and he sings the complex lyrics with ease. A sad track, it has soft music throughout.

'Chingari' by Rekha Vishal is a bonus track from the non-film album 'Ishqa Ishqa' that has been included in 'Maqbool'. A haunting track with variety of musical instruments put to use, it has a strong classical base merged remarkably with mainstream music and makes for a good hearing. Everything from vocals and lyrics to music is worth mentioning and deserves full marks.

There are four instrumental musical pieces in the album of about 1-2 min each. While 'Maqbool Theme' is mainly a violin piece with haunting effect, 'The Killing', as the title suggests, has that chill effect throughout which starts off slowly and gains momentum with drumbeats as the track culminates to an end. 'Nirvana' is a slow journey supported by a violin while 'Shoonya' begins from where Nirvana left. Best of them all, 'Shoonya' makes one sit and listen.

At the end of the album, 'Jhin Min Jhini', the only commercially viable track in 'Maqbool', makes an extended appearance and entertains again.

There is no doubt about the fact that the music of Maqbool has a touch of class about it but this fact also cannot be undermined that the score stores nothing in for the regular 'junta', perhaps with the exception of 'Jhin Min Jhini'. Except for this track, most of the others are aimed for the audience who have knowledge of classical music and may rave about the effort put in by Gulzar saab, Vishal Bhardwaj and all the singers. But commercially speaking, 'Maqbool' doesn't stand much chance of being picked by dozens in the musical stores.
