  Music Reviews
By Joginder Tuteja, May 10, 2003 - 10:02 IST

After musical superhits Maine Pyaar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and so-so Hum Saath Saath comes the fourth movie directed by Soorja Barjatya. Comparisons between hiseralier movies and Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon are inevitable !! So here we go !!

Though the songs in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun !! were good, they weren't popular from Day 1 when the album hit the music-stores. Apart from ‘Didi Teara Dewar Deewana’ and ‘Pehla Pehla Pyaar Hai’, most of the songs grew as the movie became the biggest block-buster of all times. Majority of songs were situational but nevertheless pleasant. Then came Hum Saath Saath Hain and Ram Laxman’s music fell flat on it’s face. Sooraj Barjatya seems to have realized that and made amends here with Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon. By roping in Anu Malik, he has managed to give a fresh feel to this heart warming love story starring Hrithik Roshan , Kareena Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan, which is rumored to be a remake of Rajshri’s yesteryear’s hit Chitchor starring Amol Palekar, Zareena Wahab and Vijayanedra Ghatage. No prizes for guessing ‘who-plays-who’ in MPKDH.

Chitra, who has been singing for more than a decade now Hindi movies (remember her oh-so-lovely ‘Saathiya Tune Kiya’ from Salman Khan-Revathy starrer Love), get her first major break with one of the TOP Bollywood banners by singing seven songs for MPKDH. And she certainly doesn’t let the movie team down. In fact she elevates the proceedings by singing some really foot tapping numbers that we will be talking now. Sooraj Barjatya too seems to have gone for youth this time as all the other singers ranging from Shaan, Sunidhi Chauhan and KK belong to the Y2K+3 generation.

Opening track – ‘Teri Zindagi Mein Chali Aayi Chali Aayi’ by Chitra and KK is good and a different tune. Innovative promo showcases the number as even more eye-catchy. Horse riding, rafting, bungee jumping – everything makes the number worth watching. But it is the other way round with ‘O Ajnabi’, which is very pleasant on ears, but visually not even half as appealing. And the reason behind this is the rather ‘strange’ manner in which Hrithik is made to ‘act’. If the director thought that girls would swoon over his bare torso, then he may probably be proved wrong because this act is not suiting Hritihik’s personality at all. He is good, in fact very good, when he does his charming act in ‘Ladka Yeh Kehta Hai Ladki Se’. But in ‘O Ajnabi’ – strictly No No !!! A sad version of ‘O Ajnabi’ also appears in the album but the difference between sad songs from other films and this number i s that here the lyrics are sad rather than just the tune becoming a bit slower than the original. So what we find here is the tempo of the song being the same but the lyrics conveying the sad feelings

Talking about ‘Ladka Yeh …..’, it is a winner from the word GO !!! KK’s vocals are extremely pleasant to the ears and his rendering goes very well with the mod of the song. A catchy tone, it is one of the best numbers in MPKDH along with ‘Bani Bani Bani’ by Chitra. A pure Indian song based on the ‘Gujrati dandiya’, it is about the girl’s realization for her prince charming – ‘Mr. Prem’. Chitra’s rendering and Anu’s music are the highlights of the track.

‘Sanjana, I Love You’ is a ravishing track about a guy proposing to his girl – Sanjana. Vocals of (especially) KK and Anu Malik’s fast paced music make this number a good contender to be popular. But on the flip side we have a traditional number – ‘Bhatke Panchi’ by Chitra that is the only speed breaker (in terms of the mood of the romantic album). A slow and a purely situational track about sadness being associated with love, it drags a bit and risks being booed in the movie theatres if not presented well or if it doesn’t fit in with the movie’s proceedings!! Movie makers need to be careful about this number as on the face value, it doesn’t impress much.

Two lovable romantic songs resurface with ‘Kasam Se’ and ‘….Aur Mohabbat Hai’. ‘Kasam’ is a duet by Chitra and Shaan whereas ‘..Aur Mohabbat Hai’ is a solo by Shaan. Sweet simple songs about love, they are ideal for blooming hearts. Overall good romantic tracks !!!

And when there is ‘Kareena Kapoor’, then there has to be something that speaks of ‘Pooooo…!!!!’.So here we have ‘Papa Ki Pari’, which is a song about an adorable girl child (i.e. Kareena) who tells her friends that what kind of guy is she looking for as a ‘husband material’ and how will she go around selecting a guy for herself in case her parents try to go for a arranged marriage for her. A song composed as a western track, it is set in a lighter vein and should be accommodated well by the campus crowds

Normally when a music director works with a high profile movie-maker (Subhash Ghai, Yash Chopra, Ram Gopal Verma or David Dhawan) who have their own taste of music, then it is the director’s style which is more apparent in the movie than the musician’s. But in case of MPKDH, it is Thumbs-UP for Anu Malik who displays his talent and versatility by managing to break the norm in terms of delivering a score that is ‘so-very-unlike-Sooraj Barjatya’.

Thank you Anu Malik and Sooraj for coming out of ‘shaadi-byaah-ka-ghar’ and doing something new and far more enjoyable. An album that should certainly do well with the music lovers !!

GO GET IT !!
