  Music Reviews
By Joginder Tuteja, July 5, 2002 - 15:24 IST

The tradition continues.....candy floss love stories from the house of Yash Chopra continue with Mujhse Dosti Karoge after the super-success of Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai. After Khalid Mohammad (Fiza), another film critic makes his debut as a director - Kunal Kohli. The same Kunal Kohli who anchored the popular Box Office show Chalo Cinema and was the director of the videos for the Rajshri album - Yeh Hai Prem. Remember 'Chui Mui Si Tum Lagti Ho' ?

MDK has the yuppy starcast of Hrithik, Rani Mukherji and Kareena Kapoor as Raj, Pooja and Tina. This has probably the last work of late Anand Bakshi saab and once again you feel that why is he considered a legend. Rahul Sharma makes his debut as a music composer and proves once again that music of Yashraj banner always has that 'something extra' when it comes to composing melodies. We missed Lataji in MYKSH - didn't we? Well there is a good news for all her fans - she features in four numbers out here in MDK.

'Jaane Dil Mein' is one of those melodies that has the fragrance of the 70's. A beautiful number by Lataji and Sonu Nigam, composed in a wonderful way. Listen to it once and you will be hooked it for days. Surprise of the song is Sonu Nigam who must have really worked on this number to sound more mature instead of the usual zippy way he normally sings. He is a bit subdued in this number and the effort really pays. A tune that should certainly find it's way in the background score of the movie. A slow version of the same number features with the same artists and is good as well. 'Andekhi Anjani' has all that is needed for a number to be chart-buster. Another 'sweet-n-sugary' recipe from the house of Chopras which is shot in the mandatory Swiss locales and sung by Lataji. Udit Narayan gives her company in this duet and does his job as reliably as always. The song is about the lead players dreaming of their partner whom they will be meeting soon. Everything is near perfect in this number and the song is bound to be on the top of the charts soon.

'Saanwali Si Ek Ladki' by Udit Narayan seems to be dedicated to Rani and is a regular mushy senti number. Nothing great about it, nothing new about it - but still one never knows how a choreographer and the cinematographer may do wonders even to an average number. 'Oh my darling' seems to be designed especially for the combo of Kareena and Hrithik after the popularity of K3G numbers - 'You are my Sonia' and 'Deewana Hai Dekho'. It is a naughty number where both the lead players are pulling each other's leg about being the Y2K+2 generation guy and a girl. A number that should help pulling in teeny beepy crowds to the theatres.

'Terrific Tina' is a hep, fast and happening instrumental and as the title suggests, is all about Tina i.e. Kareena Kapoor. It would probably feature in the introduction scene of Kareena Kapoor. An exciting medley of mostly yesteryear numbers of Lata ji also adds to the value of this album. Though this medley by Lataji, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam and Pamela Chopra really becomes a bit too long towards the end, you may still not mind as the numbers featured take you to the golden era of hindi film songs. The title song by Ashaji, Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan leaves no doubts in mind that one has to go for Mujhse Dosti Karoge. A traditional Yash Chopra number, it is melodious. It haunts, it excites and it entertains.

Rahul Sharma does a superb job in churning out a number of melodies in one single package. Probably the best score after Dil To Paagal Hai surpassing even Mohabbatein and Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, this album will be fast disappearing from the music store racks. Go for it before you miss out even the final copy of the day !!!
