THE FILM

On the face value, the film has an unbelievable storyline - 'A bunch of flop theater artists foiling a terror attack'. In fact it is this very unbelievable mood of the film that completely puts you off for the first 30 odd minutes.

The entire 'Dawood look-alike' episode falls flat and the hand-in-glove relationship between terrorists and cops turns out to be totally hackneyed. There is not much exciting (pun intended) in the lives of Mallika, Paresh and Rahul too and exasperation starts setting in. One liners just about manage to get a chuckle and spare a scene or two (Rahul looking at a cue from Paresh on stage before sneaking into Mallika's room), the narrative carries on to be boring. Worse, songs come out of nowhere and only take the narrative further downslide.

However, as the movie reaches its mid-point, there is some redemption in store courtesy Paresh Rawal taking charge of the situation. It is quite obvious that he understands the mess he has got in (both in reel and real life) and takes it on himself to bring something on the table. Not to say that Mallika and Rahul are bad and unwilling to contribute but their characterization is such that they can't quite make Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam interesting enough.

There are quite a few looks that Rahul is required to carry as an intelligence officer but all of it is clearly forced into the narrative for the sake of it. This is where Paresh Rawal and to an extent Kay Kay Menon chip in with some isolated scenes which help the film to stay afloat at the least.

In fact if one looks in the hindsight, the film rests on hardly a plot and is completely dependent on the gags and some slapstick humor. Well, at places it works but at quite a few it doesn't. Terrorists are shown to be a bunch of buffoons (nothing quite wrong with that, the film's genre demanded so) but the final effect of the film isn't humorous enough to benefit from the characterization.

Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam is a patchy film. There are periods when absolute boredom sets in and then there are moments when you can't help but spill away the popcorn in your hand.

CONCLUSION

In the end, Maan Gaye Mughall-E-Azam turns out to be a barely passable film which is a definite no-no when it comes to a theatrical viewing (precisely the reason why it failed miserably at the box office). However, if it is playing on home video or satellite, one can afford to give it a watch. However, there too it doesn't require an uninterrupted viewing and can be played and paused as per your will since it hardly carries a story per se which mandates a concentrated watch.
