THE FILM
One must give credit to Siddharth Anand where it is due. After all he is the only filmmaker with Yash Raj Films who has given three back to back successful films for the production house even as it is going through its worst time at the box office with a string of flops. However, Siddharth has kept the flag high with Salaam Namaste, Ta Ra Rum Pum and Bachna Ae Haseeno which may have come with a varied success tag but have been successful nevertheless.
However, the person for whom the film means most is Ranbir Kapoor. In a film that narrates the journey about a 'boy graduating to a man', Ranbir is fantastic in his transition. So whether it is the DDLJ revisited love story (of convenience though) with Minissha Lamba or a 'I am not too sure where I am headed for' love story with Bipasha (someone has to be mad enough to be unsure in this case though!) or 'I guess I am finally in love' love story with Deepika Padukone (of course boy, one can understand why you were so sure this time around), Ranbir gives an excellent account of himself.
Coming to Bachna Ae Haseeno, it is easily one of the most lavish productions of YRF in recent times. Whether it is exquisite locations or the sheer grandeur of the proceedings, Bachna Ae Haseeno doesn't cut any corners. A frothy narrative ensures that it is not 'all body no soul' scenario since there are numerous heartwarming moments that make Bachna Ae Haseeno over and above a regular laugh fest. Watch out for the moments where Minissha followed by Bipasha are ditched by Ranbir or when Ranbir himself realizes that he has to revisit his past to clear his conscience. The interval point is in fact the highlight of the film as it promises to pick the thread that Bachna Ae Haseeno introduces at the film's beginning (Ranbir looking back into the past).
While performances (Ranbir followed by Bipasha) keep the quality quotient of the film high, Bachna Ae Haseeno wouldn't have been the film it is today if not for the music by Vishal and Shekhar. The sound of 'Khuda Jaane' stays with you days after you are through watching the film and the haunting effect that it creates as a part of the background score is reminiscent of the sound that Kishore Kumar created in the background of Kora Kaagaz decades back!
The film doesn't provide any dull moments though the sequences involving Ranbir and Bipasha in the second half of the film (when the two meet again) are a little unreal since Ranbir continues to stick around in spite of being grossly humiliated. Of course it is a film we are talking about but these sequences followed by Bipasha's change in heart aren't quite convincing. Film's ending is perfect though with Deepika realizing her love for Ranbir and her subsequent meeting with him on his return.
One can confidently say that if Bachna Ae Haseeno was the debut film of Ranbir instead of Saawariya, it may well have been the QSQT (Aamir Khan) or Maine Pyaar Kiya (Salman Khan) or DDLJ (Shah Rukh Khan) moment for the young actor. The difficult task for the young actor now is to sustain the high standards he has set for himself when it comes to the lover boy image since Siddharth's film has allowed him to demonstrate such varied aspects of his person in this single film.

Most of the times, Special Features which appear alongside a YRF film on it's home video make for an engaging view. In case of Bachna Ae Haseeno, too it is no different, especially 'The Making of the Film' that showcases some of the exclusive behind the scenes footage of the film. While director Siddharth Anand along with Ranbir Kapoor takes the viewer about what happened on location, there are snippets by Bipasha, Deepika and Minissha along with cinematographer Sunil Patel, choreographer Ahmed Khan and composers Vishal-Shekhar that make this segment interesting. Together, the team shares quite a few anecdotes along with video captures of on-location shoot.
'Making of the songs' segment isn't as exciting if one has already seen 'The Making of the film' since most of the portions here are repeated. There is a 40 minutes long Zoom special episode where the lead cast of Bachna Ae Haseeno is seen chatting about the film and sharing their experience about shooting and the camaraderie they shared. Mainly for hardcore movie buffs who love to listen to their stars talking.
However, what takes the cake is the alternate ending which is included as a part of the 'Deleted Scenes'. An 8 minutes long sequence, it showcases how Deepika came back to Ranbir when he seemed to have lost all hopes of hunting her down. While this seems like a good ending, the one which made it to the final cut of the movie was definitely far better. But in any case, it is fun to watch the deleted scene to see how the movie could have ended differently!

CONCLUSION
Traditionally Siddharth Anand's films are mainly light hearted entertainers but in the process the young film maker has always ensured that his audience is more often than not seen smiling once the end credits start rolling. Same is the case with Bachna Ae Haseeno which continues to follow the gloss and candy floss formula and has turned out to third winner in a row for Siddharth.
