Aziz Mirza has never pretended to be a great filmmaker. There's an endearing simplicity about his films which carries an effervescent charm. So, when he made a comeback of sorts with Kismat Konnection, there were lots of expectations. While the promos buzzed with zestful energy, the end product turned out to be a sorry rehash of his earlier film Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman. Maybe the producers could have redeemed themselves through the DVD (UTV Home Entertainment) of the film by adding something extra special but then they didn't have any aces up their sleeves here either.
Packaging
The chocolate brown front hard cover has a nice-n-simple feel to it. There are stills from the film on the inside cover while the back features a brief synopsis of the film and the technical details about the DVD. You get one DVD and that's it. No Special Features.
Does this DVD 'Konnect'?
Not really. Why? Well, as we've mentioned above, there are no special features worth mentioning. Apart from the movie, here's what more you get:

a) 'Titles'
b) 'Fortune begins'
c) 'Haseena Bano Jaan'
d) 'Raj gets the project'
Songs:
a) 'Aai Paapi'
b) 'Kahin Na Laage Mann'
c) 'Soniye Ve Soniye'
d) 'Bakhuda Tum Hi Ho'
Subtitles:
a) Hindi
b) Arabic
There's no 'Making of the film'. Everyone knows Shahid Kapoor is a very hardworking and innovative actor and it would have been great to see him at work. But alas, no one from the production team considered it prudent to chronicle the process of filming what was considered to be an important film in his career especially coming after Jab We Met. To add to it there are no deleted scenes of the film either. In other words there's nothing that really startles you like....hey I didn't see that in the film when it released in the theatre!
Technical Features
- 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen format
- Running time: 155 minutes
- Dolby Digital 5.1
Is Kismat Konnection a Special Film?
Yes…and No. Let's start with the 'No' first. The storyline is as slim-n-old as wasted wafers. Poor architect Raj (Shahid Kapoor) is advised by whacko Hasina Bano Jaan (Juhi Chawla) to cling to lucky charm Priya (Vidya Balan). His 'kismat' turns around and luck starts favouring him big time. Raj inadvertently falls in love with Priya who's already in a relationship with an over ambitious firang-chaser. The kahani-mein-twist is as predictable as politicians during election time. Moreover, Vidya should desist from attempting a makeover as she has failed twice with Heyy Babyy and Kismat Konnection.
On the positive side, Shahid Kapoor brings huge scoops of vanilla-strawberry fragrance in his performance. He is self assured, confident, has variations in his performance and it goes without saying that he is definitely amongst the best dancers that we have. He gives a whole new stylish ebullience to Ahmed Khan's dance moves especially in 'Aai Paapi' (the hand flicks trickling into that naughty smile is a style statement that lingers on). But here one must add that Shahid shouldn't bank on Shah Rukh-histrionics any more. We've seen his brilliantly restrained performance in Jab We Met which had its own unique idiom and grammar. He should aim for others trying to ape his acting style rather than him having a hangover of one of his favourite actors.
Some of the songs are hauntingly melodious. 'Is This Love' sung by Mohit Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal and 'Bakhuda' sung by Atif are numbers that will be remembered for a long time. Binod Pradhan's shimmering camera work captures Canada beautifully. Also there are vignettes of humour (Himani Shivpuri is a real cracker of a star here) and sensitivity (between Shahid-Vidya) that makes the slow pace bearable.
Final Verdict on Kismat Konnection DVD
If you're a Shahid Kapoor fan, then you must have it.
