THE FILM

Now if only Woodstock Villa wouldn't have featured any songs, it would have folded up in 70 minutes flat. That would have made it a tele-film. And it would have been just so fair because this is what Woodstock Villa actually is - a tele-film!

So does the tele-film in the garb of a Bollywood feature film work? To an extent yes, though a hard-to-believe reason behind the entire episode leaves one counting innumerous loopholes as the end credits start rolling.

The movie gets a terrific kick start in the opening reels itself. Arbaaz Khan's wife Neha being kidnapped and Sikandar asking for ransom sets the context right away for the film. Sikandar making Arbaaz toil round the city of Mumbai is quite well done, especially due to some imaginative camera work and editing which makes you glued to your couch. In fact the cinematographer and the people behind the film's editing and background music need a special mention because they are the people who make Woodstock Villa move at a fast pace in spite of no real dialogues at work.

What happens around the interval point is a little predictable but you still go with the flow as the real reason behind the crime continues to tease your brains. Of course a few minutes before the end credits start rolling, the suspense is revealed but it is neither shocking nor exciting. In fact, it seems all so lame and easy that one wonders whether the people who plotted the entire episode were overconfident about getting scot-free at every step they took. Come on, there were so many places where they could have gone wrong; as one starts realizing over the next few hours once the movie ends.

Anyways, leaving such liberties aside, what works in favor of Woodstock Villa is that it moves at a fast pace if one is willing to fast forward each of the songs that really disrupt the narrative. Whether it is the Sanjay Dutt song or Neha's music video or the painful inclusion of Arbaaz-Neha romantic song (really annoying) - each of the tracks always manages to slow down Woodstock Villa.

However, it is a good act by Sikandar Kher which remains with you once the movie is through. He has a good built, a confident personality, nice body language, perfect dialogue delivery (at places he sounds like Abhishek Bachchan) - net net, one of the better finds of 2008 who deserves a longer innings in Bollywood. In fact more than anyone else, his best scenes are with Gulshan Grover who otherwise has little to contribute to the film's plot.

CONCLUSION

Remember those stories which were told on 'Saturday Suspense'? Woodstock Villa belongs to the same genre. A thriller where this is a one line plot at work with the story teller holding on to the suspense being revealed during the dying moments of the film.
