The first instance of a double role in Bollywood

Even as double roles get increasingly popular in Bollywood, the first instance dates back by 91 years, way back in 1917. Dadasaheb Phalke's movie Lanka Dahan saw Anna Salunke playing the first double role. Lanka Dahan was a mythological retelling of the familiar 'Ramayana' story of Rama's wife Sita being abducted by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, and Rama's triumph. Anna Salunke played the characters of both Ram and Sita in the film.
In the age of talkies, it was Shahu Modak who followed his footsteps by enacting the role of a prince and a pauper in Master Vithal's Awara Shahzada in 1933.
